“Walking into Advent can be like walking through the wardrobe.”
With its enchanting themes of snow and cold, light and darkness, meals and gifts, temptation and sin, forgiveness and hope–and even an appearance by Father Christmas–C. S. Lewis’s The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe fits naturally into the Advent season. As the reader seeks a storied king and anticipates the glorious coming of Christmas, these twenty-eight devotions alternate between Scripture and passages from the novel to prompt meditation on Advent themes. Each devotion also includes questions for reflection. The book also provides several resources for churches, including four sessions for small group discussion and ideas for creating a “Narnia Night” for families. Readers will ultimately come to know God better while journeying through Narnia.
Advent in Narnia by Heidi Haverkamp is a devotional set in Narnia for the Advent season. This devotional draws you into Narnia from C. S. Lewis’s The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe and how each of the 28 devotions relates to Jesus. There are instructions through this devotional on how to read C. S. Lewis’s The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe in combination with Advent in Narnia by Heidi Haverkamp. Advent in Narnia by Heidi Haverkamp has scripture verses and quotes from C. S. Lewis’s The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. Some of the devotional titles are “The Lamppost”, “The Bread of Life”, “Lucy”, “The Professor”, “Adam and Eve”, “Angels and Messengers”, “The Full Armor of God”, and “Aslan Is Near”. At the back of the book, There is a four session leader’s guide for small groups and a section “Creating a Narnia Night for Families” which includes decorations and activities for families as well as a prayer. Appendix A is about movie versions of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. Appendix B includes recipes and notes.
I recommend Advent in Narnia by Heidi Haverkamp for anyone who likes C. S. Lewis’s The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe or who would like an original twist to the Advent season.
